held simultaneously with the Kuwa-dzana half-marathon in Harare on Saturday.
The race attracted 43 athletes and it started at Mr Maplanka along Bulawayo Road and finished at Kuwadzana 2 High School.
Kutama won the 10km race in 38 minutes 31 seconds, finishing ahead of Sarah Murefu, an independent runner, who came second in 39:42 mins.
Third place went to Bianca Makazhu of Mufakose 1 High who finished in 40:27 mins.
For winning the race, Kutama received US$200 while Murefu got US$150.
The inaugural event was organised by Kuwadzana 2 High School to promote athletics in the high-density suburb.
In the men’s Under-20 10km event, Blessmore Chidziva of Mr Pace won the race in 31:54 mins to go home US$200 richer.
Adrian Dube of Mufakose 1 High, who won the UZ marathon two weeks ago, came second in 32:30 mins.
Another Mufakose 1 High athlete Muna-she Mataranyika settled for third place, crossing the finish line in 32:35 mins.
Jackson Siyamwede of Kuwadzana 8 Primary School won the 5km race in 19:34 mins to beat the other 35 athletes.
Kudzai Chibanda of Mufakose 4 Primary School came second in 19:57 mins while his schoolmate Prince Mutara was a second behind in third place.
Athletes battled for honours from the Kuwadzana AFM Church to Kuwadzana 2 High School.
In the girls Under-14 category, Esther Saiden of Kuwadzana 4 Primary School beat Mufakose 4 Primary’s Caroline Chibanda to win in 24:17 mins.
Rachelle Tinani of Cold Comfort Primary School settled for third place in 25:10min.
The young athletes were rewarded with US$60, US$50 and US$40 for coming first, second and third respectively.
One of the event organisers, Chipo Mutumwa, said the competition was a success.
“We are happy with the way the competition went on and we look forward to make this an annual event.
“We would also like to thank our sponsors Lobels, AfroFood, Addra, City of Harare, Hubb, the Zimbabwe Prison Services and all those who made this event a success.
“Our aim is to nature and develop talent in the high-density suburbs and with the support we got from the community, we hope to have a bigger and better event next year,” said Mutumwa.
