TEACHERS from Mathetshaneni Primary School in Nkayi, reportedly abandoned lessons on Friday and scurried for cover, following an attack by suspected goblins.
One of the teachers was reportedly rushed to Nkayi District Hospital after the attack.
Matabeleland North provincial education director, Boithatelo Mnguni confirmed the incident yesterday and said district education officers in Nkayi were handling the matter.

She said a teacher was rushed to hospital, after the alleged attack on Friday afternoon.
“The DEO (District Education Officer) has gone to meet the villagers to do something about the situation and we hope teachers will be back at work tomorrow (today),” Mnguni said.

Sources said the “strange” creatures have been causing distress at the school for some months now, and linked them to the mysterious death of a school head three months ago.

“The school was attacked by goblins on Friday and a teacher is still in hospital after the attack. The DEO was forced to temporarily close the school because of the goblins,” said a source who requested anonymity.

Nkayi District Education Officer, Musa Dove, said there was a disturbance of lessons on Friday, but denied the school was being tormented by goblins.

He said the admitted teacher suffered a suspected heart failure, which left her hospitalised.
“That’s not the case. Whoever gave you that information didn’t tell you proper events. It’s just a case of a teacher who had some hallucinations, and it’s suspected that it’s heart failure,” said Dove. He, however, confirmed a meeting was held by Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education officials, traditional leaders and council officials on Saturday, to discuss the matter.

“We talked to traditional leaders and council officials yesterday and I’ll be at the school tomorrow, to check on the situation,” he said.
Asked about the recent events leading to the death of the school head, Dove said: “Yes, the head passed on a few months ago, and if people are taking it from there, I wouldn’t know.”
