THE secretary-general of the Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB) has described the three-day grassroots training workshop as a way forward for the sport.

About 120 teachers drawn from all the country’s 10 provinces attended the workshop which is aimed at equipping grassroots trainers with the right coaching methods.

Dailles Bingadadi, the BAB secretary-general, said teachers played a crucial role in developing and nurturing talents.

She said pupils were future athletes stars so grooming and developing their skills at a tender age was important.

“This has been a good start to the year where we’ve a course for teachers involved with junior development. They’ll know what to do as they aim to catch them young.”

She challenged the participants to go back to their provinces and share what they have learnt with others.

She said: “I challenge you to go back to your respective districts and share what you’ve learnt with others. There’s so much potential in athletics and we need trained coaches to help identify and nurture talent.”
