TEAM Bulawayo is confident of bringing medals from the National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph) Interprovincial Chess finals which started yesterday and end tomorrow at Alfred Beit Primary in Harare.

Mzilikazi District dominates Bulawayo’s squad of 30 players, having 15 participants at the three-day tournament who will compete in the boys’ and girls’ under-8, 10 and 12 categories.

Bulawayo’s representatives were selected after the provincial finals that were held at Baines Junior School on Tuesday.

Moses Mutipforo, Bulawayo Chess Association’s (BCA) tournament director who will officiate in Harare believes the City of Kings’ representatives have all the qualities to bring home medals.

“I believe we have managed to come up with a strong side to take the country’s best at the Naph national finals. It is good that Bulawayo is well represented and this exposure is good for these youngsters as they get an opportunity to face real challenge from some of the best.

“Looking at the qualifiers that we had as Bulawayo, starting at zonal level, I believe we managed to get the city’s best chess players whom we have confidence that they will make us proud,” said Mutipforo.

Last month BCA launched an ambitious programme, targeting schools for their grassroots development drive.

At the national finals, Bulawayo’s participants will battle for top honours with representatives of Matabeleland South, Midlands, Matabeleland North, Masvingo, Mashonaland East, Manicaland, Mashonaland Central, Harare Metropolitan and Mashonaland West provinces.

Besides competing for medals, the participants at the tournament will fight for places in the various national teams.
