TELONE says it agreed with its workers that it will not pay bonus this year but workers will instead be allowed to encash leave days.
Last week, some workers expressed disgruntlement over proposed suspension of bonus payment this year.Commenting on the non-payment of bonus, TelOne managing director Chipo Mutasa said the company fully communicated to employees the structural business changes which had resulted in the suspension of the 2014 bonus.

“A consent form was attached to the memorandum to allow members of staff who were willing to commute their days to do so. To date, 2,001 out of the 2,136 employees have willingly signed the consent form authorising the commutation,” she said.

Mutasa said before the decision to suspend the payment of the 2014 bonus was made, the company engaged widely with staff and their representative unions.

She said in order to cushion employees from the prevailing harsh economic hardships, it was agreed at the works council that workers could encash leave days.

“TelOne is undergoing transformation in terms of its structure and the strategic focus of the business. For this to materialise, TelOne has had to implement wide ranging cost cutting measures. One of the key focus areas is the reduction of staff costs from 34 percent to 30 percent as a percentage of revenue,” she said.

Mutasa said the company was willing to work with the employees to ensure their welfare and continuity of the company.

“TelOne is committed to continued engage-ment with staff in all issues affecting the business and staff welfare. Transformation of TelOne into viability and productivity will require intense engagement and collaboration by all stakeholders,” she said.
