Sikhumbuzo Moyo Senior Sports Reporter—
SOUTH Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique emerged as the early pacesetters after Day Two of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games athletics competition being held at White City Stadium. The three countries have a total of 20 gold medals between them with sporting powerhouse South Africa claiming eight while Mozambique and hosts Zimbabwe have six each.

Zimbabwe have the highest number of silver and bronze medals compared to all the countries having garnered 11 silver and 10 bronze medals.

Day Two also saw more than 4,000 fans thronging the world class venue to witness the cream of the Southern African region’s future stars.

The race of the day was the 5,000m men final as it provided some spectacular competition that saw the Zimbabwean duo of Tendai Zimuto and Moses Tarakinyu coming first and second respectively. Zimuto clocked 15min, 19:61sec, while his fellow countryman Moses Tarakinyu who was third until the last 100metres as he made a sprint of his life, crossed the line in 15min, 21:69seconds to claim silver.

Botswana’s 400m men final team was also in a ruthless mood as they scooped all the three medals. Karabo Sibanda, whose father is a Zimbabwean doctor while his mother is a Botswana national, came first in 47.38seconds, followed by Leungo Scotch in 47.42seconds while Wanano Keetile crossed the line in 47.79seconds.

Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Andrew Langa as well as the Region 5 chairman Vetumbuavi Veii and other dignitaries from both the local and regional organising committee graced yesterday’s events.
