BEITBRIDGE’S Tongwe Primary School were crowned champions of the Ingwebu Breweries Matabeleland South soccer tournament after beating Nkazhe Primary of Gwanda North 1-0 in the boys’ final played in Maphisa on Friday.

Striker Dean Mbedzi struck the solitary goal in the first half to give Tongwe the crown. Nkazhe fought hard to find the equaliser in the second half, but Tongwe held on.

Tongwe and Nkazhe will both represent Matabeleland South in the regional finals also involving the champions of Matabeleland North and Bulawayo in Maphisa on July 31.

The province will field two teams by virtue of being the hosts.

For their efforts, Tongwe pocketed a cash prize of $1,200 and a shield while Nkazhe walked away with $1,000.

Third place went to Mkhalipe of Gwanda, who took home $800 after beating Sanzukwi. Sanzukwi got $650.

How Mine were fifth and last year’s champions Butshe could only manage sixth position.

Ponelo Ndlovu of Mkhalipe scooped the Player of the Tournament award, which carried a $30 prize money.

In the girls’ tournament, Longfield Primary of Umzingwane district emerged as champions after routing Brunapeg Primary 3-0 in the final.

Longfield took home $1,000 and Brunapeg $800. Mthwakazi secured third place and $600.

Butshe received $400 for finishing fourth.

Patience Nkala of Longfield, who scored a brace against Brunapeg, was adjudged the best girls’ player and received $25.

Matabeleland South provincial education director Tumisang Thabela, who was the guest of honour, presented the prizes to the schools assisted by Ingwebu Breweries sales, marketing and corporate affairs manager Nkosana Ndlovu.

The tournament continues this Friday with provincial champions for Bulawayo set to be decided at Barbourfields Stadium.
