Top designers billed for Mat Fashion week

Preparations for the inaugural Matabeleland Fashion Week are under way with top designers expected to showcase the latest fashion trends.The event scheduled for November 1 at Heath Streak Academy in Bulawayo will see 36 models taking to the ramp with the Outfit Band entertaining guests.

The strictly black tie event will run under the theme “Promoting Economic Development through Fashion and Sport”.

Stylist Maita Marimo, designers, Shadow by Sidumiso, Litso Fashion Label, Brand Room, Immaculate, Bold, Oh Lala and designers from the Bulawayo Board of Designers have been chosen to showcase their trends.

Socialites Mbo Mahocs and Nyasha Diva Mtamangira will be on the red carpet interviewing guests as they enter the venue.

The Bulawayo Board which was recently formed by a group of young creative designers from Bulawayo is expected to showcase a power house Autumn/Winter 2015 Collection. Litso will be showcasing her edgy range of female clothes while Immaculate will be showcasing her male range.

Brand Room, who have exhibited at the Clothing Indaba will display a mixed African range with Shadow by Sidumiso and Ara Kani (formerly known as Rebelious Klothing), who recently was at the Durban Fashion Fair showcasing their Autumn/Winter 2015 Collection.

Two new labels, Bold by Getrude Bepswa and Oh La La, a lingerie and sleep wear line will be debuting at the Matabeleland Fashion Week.

Guest designer will be Maita Marimo, one of Zimbabwe’s established designers who has showcased in New York, South Africa and other countries across the world. The Harare-based designer, is expected to showcase her 15-piece collection.

An award ceremony will be held at the end of the exhibition with designers being awarded in 10 categories including Best Female Designer, Best Make Artist, Best Display Designer and Potential Upcoming Model.

Brainchild of the event and model Amanda Mtangadura said preparations were going well. She said tickets were selling steadily with over a quarter of them sold for the 250 capacity venue.

“The fashion show will showcase designs and products in the fashion industry of Zimbabwe, Matabeleland in particular. This will be a platform for designers and customers in the fashion industry in Zimbabwe to meet and discuss so as to transform and brand our fashion as people of Matabeleland.”

The model said the fashion week would be a precursor to a bigger event that would be held next year in October.

“We look forward to making this event a major annual fashion show to be held in the City of Kings, Matabeleland,” she said.

One of the designers, Sidumiso Tshuma of Shadow by Sidumiso said he was hard at work preparing a 15-piece collection that he would showcase at the launch. “I am preparing well for the showcase and I have a collection of 15 looks that I will set a theme for. My clothing line caters for both sexes and I am having sleepless nights preparing for the big day,” he said.

The designer said the opportunity afforded by the Matabeleland Fashion Week was a bonus for local designers as it would broaden their portfolios.

“The fact that someone is participating at the fashion week launch is a boost for local designers. One might meet potential buyers of clothes and others will add a feather in their design cap,” he said.
