FORMER Young Warriors’ defender Stanford Chavingira is set to become one of the few player additions at Bulawayo giants Highlanders this season. Chavingira, 20, has impressed the trio of assistant coach Amini Soma-Phiri, goalkeepers’ coach Cosmas Zulu and Highlanders’ Academy coach Melusi Sibanda, who are overseeing Bosso’s pre-season training ahead of the arrival of new head coach Erol Akbay.

Chavingira, who was touted as one of the best defenders in the southern region in 2015, is seen as a perfect addition to the leaky Bosso defence.

He turned out for Southern Region Division One side Technosphere last season and helped them finish third behind eventual winners Bulawayo City and runners-up Bulawayo Chiefs.

The defender turned out for the Zimbabwe Under-15 side in the Olympics qualifiers in Singapore in 2010 where he scored two goals.

Zulu showered praise on Chavingira, saying they are excited by the talented defender.
“I won’t say much, but he is good. He is the kind of player we need to strengthen our defence. We’ve a number of players, who played in Division One and are trying their luck at Highlanders this season,” said Zulu.

Chavingira said he chose Highlanders as he sees no other team where he can play to the best of his ability.
“I’ve always envied Bosso. When I came here for trials, I wanted to show the coaches that I’ve the right skills to add to the team’s defence. The coaches are impressed and I’m hoping to succeed here. I will give my all to Highlanders. I’m young and that gives me the chance to give the Highlanders’ family the best of my football skills,” said Chavingira.

He cut his footballing teeth with the Hwange juniors and made the great trek across the Limpopo River to join Black Leopards before returning home to play for Technosphere.

The Highlanders’ Hwange Chapter fans urged the coaches and executive to sign the player.
