Triangle  3 – Mutare City
A THREE-GOAL second half blitz secured Triangle maximum points as they overcome Mutare City Rovers’ resistance in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Gibbo yesterday.

Ralph Kawondera, Nelson Maziwisa and Simba Makoni were on target for David “Yogi” Mandigora’s side.

Triangle had real chances early in the game but Maziwisa’s fourth minute header after a brilliant cross from Brian Juwayeyi came back into play off the crossbar.

Mutare City Rovers goalkeeper Philip Nhete twice denied clear-cut chances from Maziwisa and Courage Denias inside the opening 15 minutes.

The visitors’ real chance in the first half came when former Triangle defender William Mapfumo overlapped to set up Russel Madamombe whose rasping effort hit the wrong side of the nets in the 37th minute.

The home side started the second half with all their guns blazing and scored within a minute after the resumption when Mutare City failed to clear Juwayeyi’s corner kick. Kawondera capitalised on the defensive flaw with a well-taken strike.

Triangle added their second goal in the 64th minute. Maziwisa’s work rate benefitted him a goal out of nothing as his pressure caused a defensive mix-up between the visitors’ defence and their goalkeeper.

Maziwisa scored his first goal of the season to justify coach Mandigora’s decision to drop in-form Makoni just moments before kick-off.

Makoni was, however, later brought in to replace last week’s goalscorer Dzingai Chirambamuriwo much to the delight of the home fans.

He did not take long to register his presence in front of the City defenders as he exquisitely headed his third goal of the season and third for Triangle on the day after another sweet move by the home side in the 83rd minute.

Kawondera’s goal line clearance denied substitute Caleb Masocha a consolation goal but Madamombe could not miss from the penalty spot after Todd Matenga pointed to the spot after Triangle defender handled inside the box to make it 3-1 deep in referees’ optional time.

Triangle assistant coach Biggie Zuze was happy with the result.

“I am very happy with the result, we scored three goals and our game plan worked very well, we created a lot of good chances and that is a very good sign of the work we are doing at training and we hope to continue with the good form,” he said.

His opposite number Mutare city gaffer Taku Shariwa was not happy with the way they defended in the first 15 minutes of the second half and former Triangle defender Chasten Ngondonga echoed his coach’s sentiments.

“We lost it in the first minute of the second half, we did the exact opposite of what the coach told us to do at half-time. We went to sleep just after the breather and that cost us the game,” said Ngondonga.
