From Sikhumbuzo Moyo in Hwange
TSHOLOTSHO District defended their first day lead to land the Matabeleland North National Association of Secondary Heads (Nash) track and field athletics meet held at the Colliery Stadium over two days in Hwange. The victors got a total of 67 medals from their haul of 26 gold, 20 silver and 21 bronze medals.

Credit should be given to their technical team who drilled their athletes to specialty on the more technical relays.

On second place were the hosts Hwange with 24 gold, 10 silver and 15 bronze medals while defending champions Lupane settled for third place after collecting 18 gold, 24 silver and 23 bronze medals.

Bubi District came last with eight gold, nine silver and 17 bronze medals.

At the end of the meeting, a strong 68 member team was selected to represent the province at the Nash nationals in Chiredzi, Masvingo Province later this month.

Team Matabeleland North will report for camp March 13 at George Silundika High School.

In her keynote address just before the announcement of the team, provincial education inspector for guidance and counseling Margaret Chiname encouraged the athletes to take sport seriously as it was a source of livelihood to some.

She also said there was a need for a total shift of focus, challenging athletes to aim for better times instead of just being content with winning.

“It’s no longer about coming first or last but it’s about getting the best times or distances. It’s not everyone who was born gifted academically, some of you will indeed live from your feet and hands, richest people nowadays are athletes,” said Chiname.
