A NURSE at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) has appeared in court for allegedly assaulting her neighbour who had failed to settle a $2 debt for some chickens.

Dwyili Nontathu (45) of Mahatshula suburb appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Miss Evelyn Mashavakure facing an assault charge.

She told the magistrate that she did not beat up Sizalobuhle Dube (33), but they fought.

“Your Worship I did not assault Dube, we fought. This woman owes me money from eight months ago. I asked her politely when she would settle the debt but she insulted me using foul words that I can’t even repeat in this court. I was some distance away when she insulted me so I drew closer to her, that’s when the fight broke out,” said Nontathu.

Miss Mashavakure remanded Nontathu out of custody to September 1.

Prosecuting, Mr Nkathazo Dlodlo told the court that Nontathu and Dube live in the same neighbourhood.

He said there was a misunderstanding between Nontathu and her neighbour after she went to ask for her money.

“Accused grabbed complainant by the collar and slapped her. She pushed the complainant to the ground and sat on top of her. Accused continued to assault complainant with fists all over her body but she did not sustain any serious injuries,” said Mr Dlodlo.

In a statement, Dube said Nontathu also hit her against a wall.

“I told her I knew about the balance that I owe her, but she assaulted me all the same. When she grabbed me by the collar she pushed against a wall. She left me lying on the ground and went into my house and took a bucket. I followed her and took back my bucket then I went to the police station to make a report,” read the statement.
