THE Government will ensure that mobile network providers construct six base stations in Umzingwane District to provide villagers with access to cellphone network which has not been available in most parts for the past 20 years.

Umzingwane, especially areas in the remote parts of the districts, had no coverage at all.

Addressing villagers’ concerns in Umzingwane on Wednesday, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Dr Joram Gumbo, said the construction of the base stations would fulfil a request made to him some time back by the area’s MP Cde William Dewa.

“He approached me when I was still Government Chief Whip and requested that I push for the construction of six base stations in this district because of lack of network coverage. I promised him that the dream will be fulfilled,” said Dr Gumbo.

He said he would make sure that mobile network providers will come and construct the base stations in the area soon.

“Netone and Telecel will soon come and set up the six base stations here. I have to make sure that the promise I made to your MP has come to fruition.

It’s not only this, many things are coming. Its only we can’t tell you the dates now because we have to sit and discuss and agree with stakeholders.

However, be rest assured of mobile network coverage,” the Minister said.

Dr Gumbo urged villagers to remain united and work for the development of their area.

“Remain united and work together. Whatever you want you tell your leadership and those requests will be attended to. You should not suffer when we have all these resources around us. Use them to develop your areas,” he said.

Some areas in Matabeleland South province that are close to the country’s borders have resorted to using networks from neighbouring countries – South Africa and Botswana
