UNCERTAINTY surrounds the Premier Soccer League presidency held by former Caps United boss Twine Phiri after Zifa this week wrote to the flagship League asking them to provide the name of a person who will represent the league in the Zifa executive committee.

Constitutionally the PSL presidency sits on the Zifa board and the national association has never, since the establishment of the league, written asking for the name because its automatic. Phiri’s legitimacy as the League president became questionable the day Harare businessman Farai Jere became the majority shareholder at the club and appointed top lawyer Lewis Uriri as the club boss.

PSL statutes say that only the club chairman or president sits on its board. Phiri is the Caps United vice chairman.

“We have written to our two affiliates, the Zimbabwe Women Football and the Premier Soccer League asking them to provide us with names of people who will sit on the Zifa board. Those names must be with us by November 30 which is on Monday,” said the Zifa communications manager Xolisani Gwesela.

He said the Zimbabwe Women Football will be given more time to sort out the issue of their presidency after Miriam Sibanda was suspended over a number of charges including alleged misappropriation of funds donated by Freda Rebecca Mine. Her vice, Elizabeth Langa was then appointed the acting chairperson.

Phiri, who replaced Tapuwa Matangaidze as the league’s boss in 2010, was booted out of the Zifa board together with seven of his colleagues after 51 out of 54 councillors revoked the board’s mandate.

Chronicle Sport is reliably informed that the league’s board of governors met in Harare at the weekend that Dynamos played Harare City to deliberate on the way forward but no tangible resolution was reached.
