BULAWAYO played host to a successful colleges and universities games in which athletes from the Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association dominated the proceedings at the weekend. They are expected to dominate the Zimbabwe team for the series to involve Malawi and Zambia in August. The universities teams were first in most of the events.
The Harare Polytechnic men’s soccer team broke the universities’ hold by beating Bindura Technical University (BTU) 2-1 in the final.
With ball games finals taking place on Sunday afternoon, the soccer clash between Harare Polytechnic and Bindura Technical University (BUSE) was the main event of the day.

Captain Kasimero Chimbadzwa who plays for Black Mambas scored in 20th minute and Tichaona Maswimbo added the second in 27th minute.
Bindura pulled one back with a 20m stunning volley from Kudzai Maguduza in the 29th minute.

The second half was a bit scrappy with both teams looking tired and off form as Bindura created clear chances that all went begging.
Bulawayo Polytechnic won 5-4 on penalties against University of Zimbabwe (UZ) for third place after the match ended in a nil all draw in regulation time.

In women’ soccer Great Zimbabwe University scooped gold after a 2-1 victory on penalties over Masvingo Teachers College to restore pride in the universities camp.

Midlands State University (MSU) thrashed Bulawayo Polytechnic 41-33 in the men’s basketball final while NUST won 36-21 over MSU in the women’s final.

In the women’s volleyball final MSU fell to UZ 1-2 as Mutare Polytechnic whitewashed BUSE 3-0 in the men’s final in an epic encounter at Bulawayo Polytechnic.

The Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sports Union president Martin Zibwi commended sponsors Saywhat, FBC Bank and Nyaradzo Funeral Services for supporting the games.

“We need to continue to build the ZTISU brand  in orderr to attract more sponsors,” said Zibwi.
