Thupeyo Muleya, Beitbridge Bureau
AN unlicensed police detective based in Beitbridge has been arrested after he allegedly fatally knocked down two men following an overtaking error.

Detective Darlington Mujabuki, popularly known as “Javas” in the border town, allegedly knocked down the victims at around 5pm near the Red Star warehouse on Wednesday.

The police officer has since been charged with culpable homicide and driving without a driver’s licence.

National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said investigations into the incident are in progress.
“We are investigating a case where a police officer in Beitbridge was involved in a negligent road accident which resulted in the death of two innocent people.

“The law is very clear; we will not tolerate such deviance. The police officer has pending criminal charges and definitely he is on his way out of the force.

“We regret the accident and the deaths. It’s unfortunate we have to allow the law take its course and conduct a disciplinary hearing before discharging such bad apples from the force.”

Chief Supt Nyathi said Detective Mujabuki tried to overtake another motorist and the two vehicles side swiped resulting in his Subaru veering off the road.

He said the car knocked down the two men who were by the roadside and they died on the spot.

The bodies have been taken to Beitbridge District Hospital pending post mortems.

“We will announce the names of the deceased persons in due course,” Chief Supt Nyathi said.

Detective Mujabuki has a pending case of bribery involving R30 which he committed at the border post recently.
