A NJUBE man was yesterday arraigned before the courts for allegedly stabbing a vendor’s husband outside a night club following a misunderstanding with a woman after he had bought a cigarette for R1.

Sethu Gumede, 33, who is facing an attempted murder charge allegedly stabbed Stephen Tizirayi with an Okapi knife in the abdomen and fled leaving his intestines protruding.

Gumede told senior regional magistrate Mark Dzira that he was involved in a fight with Tizirayi as he was part of robbers that attacked him and he had to seek medical help.

“I don’t admit to attempting to kill Tizirayi as he was part of a gang of men that attacked me that day. I left the club early heading home and I met some men who demanded money from me and that is how a fight started,” said Gumede.

He said the men assaulted him until he lost consciousness and when he recovered; he was at Mpilo Central Hospital.

“I saw police officers the next morning and they accused me of attempting to kill someone. I’m not sure if anyone was injured during the fight with the men but I was injured,” said Gumede.

Testifying yesterday, Tizirayi said he was selling wares with his wife at Gijima Night Club when he spotted Gumede standing next to his wife.

“My wife told me that Gumede was pestering her for R1 saying he wanted change after buying one cigarette for the same amount. He said I should move closer to him and suddenly he stabbed me and before I could give a chase, I realised my intestines were protruding,” he said.

Magistrate Dzira remanded Gumede in custody to tomorrow for judgment.

Prosecuting Tinashe Dzipa alleges that Tizirayi’s wife Brenda Furayi was selling her wares on the morning of August, 9, last year outside Gijima Night Club.

Gumede approached the woman and bought a cigarrete for R1 and demanded change, even though he was not supposed to get any.

He started harassing the woman and when Tizirayi came out of the club to check on his wife, he was stabbed by Gumede before he could ascertain what had happened.

Gumede then fled from the scene, but was apprehended after some people gave chase.
