President Hugo Chavez’s decision to repatriate gold reserves held in foreign banks.
According to PSUV vice president Aristobulo Isturiz, the mobilisations planned nationwide for the coming days begin with an assembly which will have among participants the minister of Finance and Planning, Jorge Giordani, and the president of the Central Bank, Nelson Merentes.”
We summon Caracas residents so that (they) can ask questions if they have any doubt, because we will strongly support Chavez’s decision”, said Aristobulo Isturiz.
Last Wednesday, Chavez announced the repatriation of US$11 billion in gold held abroad, which belong to the international reserves, due to the financial crisis currently pounding the United States and European nations.
The measures increased the national political debate, with the support of PSUV members and the rejection of the opposition.
The ruling party and its allies consider the measures as part of the financial sovereignty and a model of socialist development, while the opposition calls them of negative impact. – Prensa Latina.
