A BULILIMA villager stumbled upon human remains covered in blood in a cave while collecting firewood. Matabeleland South acting provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Thabani Mkhwananzi said the remains were found on Monday in a cave along Tshankwa River.

He said indications were that the remains belonged to a male adult. Sgt Mkhwananzi said foul play was suspected and investigations were underway.

“On Monday at around 2PM, a villager identified as Stalene Makhosonke was collecting firewood along Tshankwa River when he discovered human remains in a cave in a bushy area. He alerted community leaders who then reported the matter to the police,” he said.

“Although the identity of the body has not been ascertained, the remains belong to a male adult. The body has been taken for postmortem to ascertain the cause of death as the state of the clothes suggest foul play.”

Sgt Mkhwananzi appealed to anyone with information that may assist the police in solving the case to approach the nearest police station.

Headman Sikhathini, whose jurisdiction covers the area where the human remains were found, said only the head, arms and legs were found and some of the body parts were missing.

He said the cause of death remains a mystery.

“This is a shocking incident indeed and what is even more frightening is that the clothes of this person are stained with blood. It remains a mystery whether this person was attacked by animals or other human beings,” Headman Sikhathini said.

“We’ve tried to ask around but it appears that the community is in the dark when it comes to the identity of this person.”
