SIZINDA villagers just outside Victoria Falls town have taken it upon themselves to repair a school that was destroyed by heavy rains last year. Sizinda Secondary School in Hwange West was destroyed by a storm last December, leaving classroom blocks roofless. Last term, pupils absconded from school on rainy days as the school’s four blocks were roofless.

Ward 3 councillor Denis Thebe said villagers came together and contributed money to buy roofing material, with the Minister of Macro Economic Planning and Investment Promotion Obert Mpofu, who also hails from Hwange West, chipping in.

“Classroom blocks were destroyed by rain in December and the school was forced to close early. ‘‘Last term pupils were learning in open space and lessons were disturbed by rain,” said Clr Thebe.

He said Minister Mpofu and parents raised about $4,000 for the repairs.

“Parents contributed to buy some material and Minister Mpofu chipped in. We got to understand that the school was actually his initiative when he was still the governor for Matabeleland North,” said Clr Thebe.

“We’re happy that finally our children can go back to school and learn in better conditions than to be exposed to cold weather since we’re entering the winter season.

‘‘As a community we’re grateful to our leaders if they show concern about the welfare of our children and development.”
