ZIMBABWE Volleyball Association (ZVA) Coaches’ Committee chairman Vulindlela Moyo is conducting a three-day coaching clinic for schools and clubs that ends at Eveline High School in Bulawayo today.

About 40 coaches are attending the workshop and are in line to receive certificates should they successfully complete the basic volleyball coaching course.

Moyo, who is also a holder of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Level 3 coaching certificate, said the initiative was targeted at schools and clubs’ coaches to empower them with proper volleyball coaching skills.

“We’re trying to restart the fundamental basics of volleyball so as to develop and market the game. This will help the game develop from primary school level to a higher level of participation,” said Moyo.

Progress Mphathiwa from Masendu Primary of Plumtree said the course came in handy with them learning numerous ways of improving the sport.

“I’ve gained a lot from this course. We’ve been equipped with knowledge of systematic coaching. The course comes at a time I’ve just assumed the coaching position at my school. I’m now aware of what’s expected of me as a coach and how to help young players develop their talent,” said Mphathiwa.

Mollet Ncube, a Nust sports science and coaching student, said she had also benefited since she is a member of the college’s volleyball team.

“I’ve benefited twice because I managed to put into practice what I learnt at school. This course has also enlightened me on basic techniques that we haven’t covered at school and I hope I can increase my knowledge of the sport and impart it to others,” said Ncube.

Some of the topics covered under the course included the history and development of volleyball, basic volleyball techniques, warm-up and cooling, stretching and flexibility, role of sport science and first aid in sport, training session plan, team composition and techniques.

The participants also had practical sessions to demonstrate what they had learnt.
