Police have arrested the driver of a pick-up truck that was involved in an accident with Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko’s official Mercedes Benz last week, ZRP National spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba has said.

This is contrary to private media reports that the accident was stage managed.

In a statement yesterday, Asst Charamba said the driver (name not supplied) had been charged with three counts of contravening the Road and Traffic Act.

“The driver has since been charged for contravening Section 3 (2) of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 13:11, parking or remain stationary on a dangerous place, Section 77 (c) of the Road Traffic Construction Equipment and Use Statutory Instrument 154/2010, Insecure load.

“The driver has also been charged for Contravening Section 51 (1) of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 13:11, Driving without due care and attention,” she said.

“After conducting investigations, the attending officer concluded that the Toyota Hiace truck driver had failed to secure his load, remained stationary in a dangerous position and drove without due care and attention.”

“We encourage the media to report objectively after sourcing for facts on accidents especially those involving senior officials.”

VP Mphoko was involved in an accident last Saturday, a day after his appointment as VP.

He was travelling with his wife and two others in his official vehicle in a convoy along Enterprise Road when he rammed a truck that was carrying wedding food and materials.

The passenger in the truck was the only one injured.

The tragedy came also after unknown assailants last week broke into VP Mnangagwa’s office and laced a deadly poisonous substance that left this secretary battling for life at a local private hospital.

VP Mnangagwa also escaped death when a Mercedes Benz he was travelling in was rammed on the driver’s side in October by a staff bus belonging to Parirenyatwa Group of hospitals.

Meanwhile, the police have warned motorists against stopping in the middle of the road if they encounter unforeseen situations by other motorists.
