THE Bulawayo Provincial Civil Protection Unit (CPU) has sent a report to the government requesting assistance for the Nketa 6 family that lost five members after their rented house caught fire on Thursday.

The five were burnt to death while three others escaped, one with serious burns.

Bulawayo provincial administrator, Khonzani Ncube yesterday said the CPU team visited the family, compiled a report and sent it to Harare.

“We visited the family after the tragic incident and made an assessment. We’ve compiled a report and sent it to the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and  National Housing indicating what the family needs.

“We also indicated that the family wishes to bury their loved ones at their rural home in Murewa but have financial challenges,” said Ncube.

Meanwhile, Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko yesterday visited the family and donated groceries worth $1,500.

Handing over the groceries, VP Mphoko, who was accompanied by his wife Laurinda and officials from Choppies consoled the family and encouraged the community to give them the support they need.

VP Mphoko joined by Health and Child Care Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa also visited one of the survivors, Musafare Chidembo, 41, who is being treated for serious burns at Mpilo Central Hospital.

Erasmus Chidembo, Musafare’s brother expressed gratitude to VP Mphoko and his family for the assistance they received.

“We’re grateful to the VP for helping us. This is a difficult situation that has left all of us devastated. But we appreciate the assistance we’ve received from the VP and members of the community.

“Our wish is to bury our loved ones in our rural home in Murewa but we’re facing financial challenges,” said Chidembo.

Musafare survived the inferno, while his wife Ester Mazidziwa, 29, his son Brian, 19, daughters Nicollete, 12 and Nicky, 4, and his brother Learnmore Chidembo, 26, were consumed by the intense fire.

His other children Mitchell, 9, and Tafadzwa, 12, escaped unhurt.

The family suspects the fire might have been caused by an electric fault as the flames erupted from the ceiling.

National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said investigations were in progress.

Bulawayo’s chief fire officer Richard Peterson said the fire department was still trying to establish if the fire was not started deliberately.

He said arson could not be ruled out.

Those wishing to assist the family can visit house number 7201 Nketa 9 or call 0777416565 or 0778484881.
