VICE President Phelekezela Mphoko will this week visit various capital projects being undertaken in Matabeleland North Province to assess progress and find ways of possibly expediting them. The province has a number of developmental projects most of which are stuck at various stages of implementation due to resource constraints.

Some of the projects are the Gwayi-Shangani Dam, which is a key component of the Matabeleland Zambezi Water Project, Elitsheni Government Complex in Lupane, Lupane-Bubi Dam, Lupane State University, China Africa Sunlight Energy mine also in Lupane, Pollard Dam in Bubi and Bulawayo Kraal Irrigation in Binga among others.

VP Mphoko will between tomorrow and Friday visit Hwange, Lupane, Nkayi and Bubi districts, the Minister of State for Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs Cain Mathema told The Chronicle yesterday.

“We have postponed to next week our water project which we were supposed to do in Tsholotsho on Wednesday because VP Mphoko will be visiting the province where he will go around project sites,” said Minister Mathema.

He said the Vice President will also visit Hwange Colliery Company and Gwayi-Shangani Dam site tomorrow before addressing a Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) Meeting in Lupane on Thursday morning.

“He will also visit Pollard Dam and possibly go to Sikhobokhobo in Nkayi where there is a heifer project,” said Mathema. The Gwayi-Shangani Dam will be the third largest in the country after Tokwe-Murkosi and Lake Mutirikwi.

The project will include a 245km pipeline running from the Zambezi River and proceeding to a reservoir in Bulawayo’s Cowdray Park suburb.
