A WAR veteran from Bulawayo’s Pumula South suburb recently committed suicide by hanging in his bedroom.

Cde Joe Moyo’s family is at a loss as to why he took his own life on Friday last week at about 1PM.

The war veteran, (63) is expected to be buried today at the Bulawayo Provincial Heroes Acre in Nkulumane suburb.

His brother and the family’s spokesperson Mr Moses Nyoni said Cde Moyo’s death came as a shock as he never showed any signs of distress.

“It happened on Friday last week. We don’t know what led him to hang himself as he didn’t seem troubled. Nothing was unusual with him; at least that’s what we believed. He didn’t leave any suicide note,” said Mr Nyoni.

“He entered his bedroom and locked the door under the pretext that he was taking a bath. After 30 minutes his family became worried after he did not come out from the bedroom. They had to break the door to gain entry and found him hanging from the roof trusses,” he said.

Cde Moyo joined the liberation struggle in 1976 and did his military training at Nampundu Transit Camp before being transferred to Membesi Training Camp in Zambia.

He is survived by wife Otilia, four children and seven grandchildren.

Mourners are gathered at house number 13811 Pumula South.

Meanwhile, Acting Bulawayo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Abednico Ncube urged members of the public to seek counselling when they are facing any problems.
