CORRECTIONAL services side, Whawha moved four points clear of the table standings after overcoming a stubborn Vumbachikwe 1-0 at the prison grounds in a Central Soccer League tie.It was the last round of matches before the mid season break.

Action resumes on the weekend of August 9-10.

Prolific goal scorer, Albert Matewu’s first half strike settled matters for the Gweru outfit.

Whawha took advantage of a slip up by their closest rivals Tongogara who succumbed to their second defeat of the season after going down 2-3 to Gweru City while police outfit, ZRP Beitbridge could only manage a 0-0 draw away to FC Platinum Under-19s.

The correctional services side has now amassed 29 points in 13 matches while ZRP Beitbridge and Tongogara lie second and third with 25 points from the same number of matches but are separated by goal difference.

If history is anything to go by Whawha are the favourites to land the sole promotional ticket for the league as teams which have led the race during the half way stage in the league have gone all the way to win the championship.

FC Platinum (then Mimosa) were three points clear of second placed Chapungu and went all the way to become the inaugural CSL winners in 2010.

Hardbody, Tripple B and Chapungu followed suit and also went on to be crowned champions in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 seasons.

Whawha secretary Jimiel Marecha was however cautious when asked about his side’s prospects.
