WHAWHA powered to the top of the Zifa Central Soccer League table after coming from behind to beat ZRP Gwanda 2–1 at Phelandaba Stadium in Gwanda.

Motion Muponda and Ishmael Tayengwa ensured Whawha won in the absence of coach Luke Petros-Jukulile, who was attending a funeral.

Assistant coach Mkhulisi Tshuma oversaw proceedings in Gwanda.

The prisons and correctional services outfit took advantage of a slip up by Nichrut, who lost 0–1 to TelOne at Wilson Fields on Saturday.

The weekend results shot Whawha to the top of the pack with 40 points while Nichrut dropped into second position with 38 points.

TelOne assistant coach Brian Zingwe commended his charges for a disciplined display, which gave Nichrut little room to manoeuvre.

“Our game plan was to absorb pressure from Nichrut so that we get them on the counter and this worked very well. I am happy that we atoned for the 2–0 defeat we suffered at the hands of the same team in Shurugwi,” said Zingwe.

John Nyikadzino, the Nichrut coach, expressed disappointment with the result, saying he will go back to the drawing board ahead of their next game.

“Obviously, I am disappointed with the result considering that we were the better side, but failed to utilise our chances, especially set pieces.

“We will need to go back to the drawing board and re-strategise and hopefully we will strike the right chord in our next game,” said Nyikadzino.

Meanwhile, former Premiership outfit Border Strikers’ stay in the league hangs in the balance due to non-payment of affiliation fees.

Border Strikers were barred from fulfilling their match against Chrome Stars and the points were subsequently awarded to the chrome miners on a 3–0 score line.

Gwanda United has already been expelled from the league over the same matter.
