A 27-YEAR-OLD Bulilima woman died after drinking an aloe concoction in a bid to terminate her pregnancy while at her employer’s homestead where she worked as a domestic worker.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Philani Ndebele confirmed the incident which occurred in Nswazi area on Wednesday at around 3PM.

He said the woman, Sheba Matongo, was found dead by a neighbour.

“I can confirm that we received a report of sudden death from Madlambuzi policing area. Sheba Matongo was found lying dead in her employer’s kitchen hut by Mr Phineas Ncube.

“Matongo was trying to terminate a pregnancy as there was a five litre tin which contained crushed aloe leaves which were boiled next to where she was lying,’’ he said.

Insp Ndebele said the matter was reported to the police who attended the scene. He said Matongo’s body was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for post mortem.

Headman Nswazi said Mr Phineas Ncube was on his way to church when he heard Matongo’s two-year-old child crying.

He said Mr Ncube went to inquire and found Matongo dead. “Matongo was employed as a domestic worker at a home in Nswazi area. It appears that she was pregnant but her boyfriend denied responsibility for the pregnancy.

“It seems this prompted Matongo to terminate the pregnancy. She was alone at her workplace when she drank the concoction. Her two-year-old child started crying which attracted Mr Ncube while he was passing by on his way to church. He proceeded to the homestead where he found Matongo lying dead on the floor of the kitchen hut,’’ said Headman Nswazi. — @DubeMatutu
