Johannesburg – The 29-year-old woman in whose fridge four dead babies were found appeared in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court yesterday, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

The case was postponed to March 2, said regional spokesperson Luxolo Tyali.

The accused, Malice Jacobs, has not yet pleaded. She intended to apply for bail.

The four bodies were found in the fridge in New Brighton, Mthatha, earlier this month by police acting on a tip-off.

They had to break into the house because the owner was not there.

Her backyard tenants told the police she was in Johannesburg attending a funeral.

Jacobs was arrested several days later.

At the time, police spokesperson Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said Jacobs claimed she was the mother of all the four babies.

“But we don’t agree with her,” said Fatyela, adding that DNA tests would be conducted.

According to the post mortem, a shoelace was found tied around the neck of one of the babies, indicating it was strangled, Fatyela said. – Sapa
