FIVE Bulawayo-based and sport loving women have started the process of reviving the Women in Sport movement in the city with the first meeting towards that set for Wednesday next week.

The quintet  met at the Highlanders club house on Africa Day during the official relaunch of the Highlanders netball team and agreed to revisit what they called a very noble project which sought to capacitate women in sport and as a way of making up for a historical bias against them in sports.

Cecilia Malunga, Dailes Bingadadi, Sevi James, Judith Mwemba and Mildred Sandi agreed that there was need for more women to participate in sport, not just netball and other so-called feminine sporting activities.

“It’s really important that we have women participating in sport, not just as athletes but administrators as well. We want to make sure there is mass participation of women in sport. Women sports persons must and should know that sport is no longer a part time thing but a huge and growing industry,” said Bingadadi.

She said once the movement takes shape, they will have a number of programmes which are meant to capacitate women in sport.

“Like before where we visited such places like Khami prisons and Llewellyn Barracks to encourage other women to take part in sport, we also want to resume such programmes,” said Bingadadi.

There has been a steady increase in women participation in sport on a global scale. However some sport associations still discriminate against women especially on prize money.
