At 19 years, and still a junior, Mutanga entered competition with the seniors and romped to victory in the 100m in a time of 10,38 seconds.
Mutanga, of WWS, left Francis Zimwara of Ziscosteel to take second place as the Midlands athlete finished in 10,53.
Silence Munetsi of Mufakose was third in 10,81s.
Mutanga was also in fine form as he won the senior men’s 200m in 21,01s.
For the second time, Zimwara was shown a clean pair of heels by Mutanga.
Zimwara finished on 21,16s with Nigel Tom of Sparrows getting the bronze on 21,73s.
There was also an impressive time in the Under-18 girls’ 100m by Buhle Geza of WWS who won in 12.64s.
Yvonne Chinyani of Freda Rebecca was second in 12.85s while Tecla Chogugudza of Visitation was a distant 13.15s.
Athletes from WWS dominated the sprints as Cara Tom won the Under-20 girls’ 100m in 12,70s ahead of club-mate Kudzaishe Gondora who finished in 12,72s.
Liona Musikavanhu of St Francis of Assisi came third in 13.05s.
Nyasha Gotora of WWS won the Boys’ Under-20 high jump after clearing 2,03metres with clubmate Takudzwa Mhlanga coming second on 1,96m while Oscar Katuka of Ashanti jumped 1,91m.
Seasoned runner Thandiwe Nyathi from LM Academy performed to expectations when she won the Under-18 girls’ 1500m in 4 minutes 37.33sec.
Nyathi took a commanding lead from the gun and firmly established her position after 300m and then finished more than 20metres ahead of Abigail Karidza of Ashanti who clocked 5.03.75min.
Sparrows’ Tolakeli Maphosa clocked 5.10.89 min. The track and field championship witnessed a good number of clubs from across Zimbabwe coming in for the event.
Harare Athletics Board secretary Silas Muringani, was pleased with the turn-out and rates the Robert Lerumo Track and field as one of the best meetings this year.
“To a large extent, it was a success because we managed to have clubs from across Zimbabwe.
“It was also pleasing to see the juniors and the youth posting some good times.
“Some of the times by the juniors meet the qualifying standards for most of the regional and international events,” said Muringani.
The event attracted athletes in the Under-14, Under-16, Under-18, Under-20 categories and seniors.
The Zimbabwe Prison Services, Sparrows, Mufakose High One, St Annes Goto High, Ashanti, Ziscosteel, Hwange, Freda Rebecca, Speed Dynamics, WWS, Prince Edward, Visitation, Mr Pace, Fletcher, Girls High, Gejo raMaiRubi, Transparency, Young Pioneers, Lord Malvern, Kandava and Hwange sent athletes to the meet.
