AS part of the run-up to the official launch of the rebranded Zimbabwe National Youth Games in Hwange on Friday, the Ministry of Sport and Recreation in conjunction with the national organising committee will tomorrow hold an induction workshop for sport competition directors.

The induction workshop will be followed by a Games’ General Assembly to be attended by all stakeholders, who include schools, tertiary institutions, the community, uniformed services and the media.

“In keeping with the tradition of the Games, the sport competition directors seconded by the National Sport Associations shall be inducted into the Games’ background, rationale and objectives by the National Games Organising Committee so that together we will be on the same page. This is being done to ensure that the new sporting disciplines have the same appreciation of the Games as the old ones,” said Sport and Recreation Commission spokesperson Tirivashe Nheweyembwa.

“After the induction workshop, a Games Assembly will be held. The Inter-Ministerial platform, National Sport Associations, the Local Organising Committee and the National Games Organising Committee will also form part of the Games’ platform.

“This is the highest decision making organ of the Games and all the rules and regulations will be tabled there for ratification with or without amendments,” he said.

Nheweyembwa said the success of the revised edition of the Games will hinge on the support from all sectors of society given past successes, such as reaching out to young people by availing opportunities for them to pursue their sporting dreams at a higher level.

“It is imperative that we all give our support to Matabeleland North province so that many more youths may be reached and assisted to scale their sporting endeavours.

“To this end, we kindly appeal to corporates, state organs, parastatals, non-governmental organisations and the community at large to rally behind this noble cause,” said Nheweyembwa.

The launch of the Games will be held at the Edmund Davies Hall in Hwange on Friday.

This will set in motion the staging of the event set to bring together more than 15 000 athletes and officials to Matabeleland North.
