THE crunch Zanu-PF Politburo meeting that has been postponed twice this week, will finally take place today at a time party supporters expect action to be taken against some senior officials accused of fanning factionalism and perpetuating corrupt activities.
The most widely debated item that is expected on the agenda is how the party will deal with Vice-President Joice Mujuru following allegations of corruption, subversion and abuse of office levelled against her.

The Politburo meeting was deferred on Wednesday because of a Cabinet meeting, while it failed to take place yesterday to enable President Mugabe to officiate at a graduation ceremony at Harare Institute of Technology.

Zanu-PF secretary for information and publicity Cde Rugare Gumbo confirmed the meeting will take place today.

“Yes, the Zanu-PF Politburo meeting is on tomorrow (today),” he said. “We’re looking forward to it.”

Cde Gumbo said he had not yet seen what was on the agenda. “I haven’t seen what items are on the agenda. That’s being handled by secretary for administration Cde (Dydmus) Mutasa,” he said.

Cde Mutasa could not be reached on his phone yesterday. But Zanu-PF insiders said the Politburo was expected to discuss serious allegations of corruption, factionalism and subversion and abuse of office being levelled against the party’s Second Secretary and Vice President Dr Mujuru.

The allegations were raised by First Lady Cde Grace Mugabe during her “Meet the People rallies” that ended last week.

She repeated the allegations yesterday in Mazowe, Mashonaland Central province, where she met war veterans and other senior party leaders.

Another hot debate is expected on the proposed alignment of the party’s constitution with the Unity Accord and national Constitution on how the two vice presidents assume their posts.

Another Zanu-PF insider said there was growing concern that party spokesperson Cde Gumbo was now in the tendency of misrepresenting Politburo positions and the issue should be dealt with once and for all.

The party insider said gloves were off now in the ruling party and everybody felt that it was high time to be frank with each other.

Other major issues to be discussed include an update on the preparation of the National People’s Congress pencilled in for December.

The Politburo is expected to be briefed by various committees dealing with portfolios on what they were doing in preparation for the congress.

Some of the activities that were being carried out included fundraising and drafting of guidelines to elect Central Committee members.
