THOUSANDS of voters are queuing to vote today in two by-elections for the vacant Chirumanzu-Zibagwe and Mt Darwin West parliamentary seats. Chirumanzu-Zibagwe was declared vacant after the elevation of Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa to Vice President, while Mt Darwin West had been won by the former Vice President Joice Mujuru in July 2013 before she was sacked from the government in December last year.

Zanu-PF said last night it was confident of winning the two by-elections, which are being boycotted by its main rivals who claim they are pressing for “electoral reforms”.

Zanu-PF spokesperson Cde Simon Khaya Moyo said: “Zanu-PF as a revolutionary party is looking at the by-elections in Mt Darwin West and Chirumanzu-Zibagwe with political glee, as the two constituencies have since independence been one party constituencies.

“The cowardly withdrawal from the race by the same opposition losers confirms their demise. Election reforms were done by all the parties concerned hence their total participation in the July 31 elections and of course their dismal performance.”

Cde Khaya Moyo urged party members to go and vote in their thousands.

“We call for unity, an orderly and peaceful election as the voters have done in the past. Voting for Zanu-PF is to vote for the sovereignty and defence of our hard won independence and the future prosperity of Zimbabwe.”

Cde Auxilia Mnangagwa, the Vice President’s wife, will represent Zanu-PF in the Chirumanzu-Zibagwe vote in Midlands Province while Cde Barnwell Seremwe is tipped to claim Mt Darwin West in Mashonaland Central Province.

The MDC-T and the MDC pulled out of the by-elections in the wake of heavy defeats by Zanu-PF.

In the Chirumanzu-Zibagwe ballot, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said 85 polling stations had been set up, and 380 police details deployed.

Five candidates are vying for the seat and 34,193 people have registered to vote.

The five candidates are Cde Mnangagwa, Gadzamoyo Dhewa of the Good People’s Movement Party, Munashe Mutodza of the National Constitutional Assembly, Willbroad Kanoti an independent candidate and Abigail Musambasi of Transform Zimbabwe.

There are 36,600 voters in Mt Darwin West and the candidates are Kenard Fungai of Transform Zimbabwe, Cde Seremwe, Cyril Muradzi of the Freedom Front of Zimbabwe and the National Constitutional Assembly’s Reuben Mafigu.
