ZIFA Southern Region is on high alert to deal with any cases of match fixing and warned that all allegations would be fully investigated.

Musa Mandaza, the Zifa Southern Region boss, made this declaration yesterday in the wake of reports of suspicions in the match involving title contenders Bulawayo Chiefs and Old Nic Mine.

According to reports, the miners allegedly used an infield player as a goalkeeper and were walloped 6-0 by the Thulani Sibanda coached Bulawayo Chiefs.

“Our eyes and ears are fully on the ground. We’re aware that the league has reached a critical stage where you can’t really ignore reports of unsportsmanship conduct.

“What we want is for a winning team to be promoted on merit and merit only,” said Mandaza.

He said the onus was on Zifa to protect football from uncouth elements.

“During our midyear meeting that’ll be held in Hwange at the end of this month, we’ll invite our refereeing fraternity so that we all talk with one voice in our endeavour to keep our game clean,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bulawayo City shot to the top of the league table following a deserved 1-0 win over title rivals Chiefs in an exciting city derby at Luveve Stadium on Saturday.

Mkhululi Moyo’s strike was all Philani “Beefy” Ncube’s side needed to collect maximum points and reclaim top position that had changed hands a week ago.

The win put City three points clear of Chiefs.

City paraded their second half of the season finds in the form of former Highlanders players Innocent Mapuranga and Welcome Ndiweni. The two joined the lower tier league in the mid-season transfer window after failing to nail down starting berths at Bosso.

Chiefs’ Ishmael Wadi had a torrid time with Highlanders’ fans, who jeered him each time he touched the ball. The Bosso fans felt let down by Wadi’s failure to join the Bulawayo giants last month despite having trained with them ahead of the away game against Triangle.

In other matches, Bantu Rovers continued with their fine form by dispatching Amagagasi by a solitary goal scored by Angel Moyo in Victoria Falls.

Rovers, who had an indifferent start to the season, are now just four points behind Chiefs and firmly among the championship contenders.
