Zifa probe PSL finances TWINE PHIRI

Harare Bureau
ZIFA have revealed they will undertake a forensic audit of the Premier Soccer League to establish the financial status of the country’s top-flight league now that it is set to be under new leadership next month.
The PSL have been under the leadership of former Caps United president, Twine Phiri, for the past six years.
The Harare businessman will hand over the leadership of the domestic Premiership to a new leader — either Kenny Mubaiwa of Dynamos or Peter Dube of Highlanders — who are battling for the PSL chairmanship.
Elections are set for March 5.
Phiri is not in the running for the PSL chairmanship after he was elbowed out by rules and regulations, which govern the league, which say that only a club chairman/president can lead the top-flight league.
The Harare businessman has also been part of the Zifa board, by virtue of his position as the PSL leader, but lost that seat when the entire leadership of the association had their mandate to lead the national game revoked by councillors last year.
Zifa say it is only fair that they know the financial status of their biggest affiliate, now that its leadership is changing hands, and the deals that were signed by Phiri when he was still in charge of the PSL.
“Following the end of an era of the PSL leadership under Twine Phiri, Zifa would like to advise the football public that we’ll institute a Forensic Audit which will among other issues look at:-

(i) SuperSport deal viz-a-viz benefits, Agents.
(ii) League’s financial standing.
(iii) Relations with sponsors.
(iv) Development programmes in the last six years.
(v) The League’s role in the Zifa debt,” a statement released by Zifa chief executive, Jonathan Mashingaidze, said.
The forensic audit comes at a time when the domestic football family has been buzzing with reports that the PSL’s SuperSport deal was conducted by a South Africa-based agent who only cropped up at the time of the signing of that agreement.
The agent, sources said, was paid a commission although he has never worked for the league in any capacity whatsoever before and after the signing of that deal.
Some of the PSL clubs have been battling to get hold of the contract entered between the PSL leadership and SuperSport but, now and again, they have been hitting a brick wall.
