Zimbabwe trail Bangladesh by 380 runs.

ZIMBABWE were in trouble yesterday, negotiating a tricky 19 overs towards the end of the day, reaching 53 runs for the loss of one wicket at stumps, after bowling out Bangladesh for 433 on the second day of their second Test match in Khulna.

Debutant Brian Chari (21) got in and calmed the nerves of a nation after an early setback, and will have Hamilton Masakadza (15) at the crease this morning, needing another 181 runs to avoid the follow-on.

Earlier, Zimbabwe had to endure 158 overs in the sun, but they patiently found a way to take the seven wickets required, albeit in a laboured fashion.

Tinashe Panyangara, Tendai Chatara and part-time off-spinner Malcom Waller took two wickets apiece to eventually put a lid on Bangladesh’s first innings total.

Tamim Iqbal proved to be a thorn in the flesh as he reached his first century in four years but eventually got out on 109 runs after trying to chase a wide delivery off Hamilton Masakadza.

There was also time for Shakib Al Hasan’s third Test century, an innings that put Zimbabwe’s bowling attack under pressure as it constituted two sixes and 18 fours. Shakib scored freely to all parts of the ground for most of the day which made Brendan Taylor’s task as captain an arduous one.

With the wicket not offering anything for his frontline seamers, Taylor turned to his part-timers, and in fact it was Malcom Waller who eventually got rid of Shakib for 137 runs.

A leg-before-wicket (lbw) decision by umpire Billy Bowden meant Taijul Islam, who took eight wickets in the first Test, removed Sikandar Raza Butt for 11 runs with a slider that Hawkeye readily revealed would have clipped the outside part of leg stump.

Still 380 runs adrift and with nine wickets in hand on a flat pitch, Zimbabwe will have much to look forward to on day three on Wednesday, as the quest to keep the series alive continues.
