THIS year’s independence celebrations have been described as unique following Zanu-PF’s resounding election victory in last year’s harmonised elections.
As the country celebrates 34 years of independence, Zimbabweans have been urged to reflect on the country’s achievements, which include the triumph by the revolutionary party over opposition parties.

Today Zimbabweans from all walks of life will converge at various venues dotted around the country to celebrate 34 years of independence.
The main celebrations will be held at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.

In Bulawayo, all roads lead to White City Stadium, where Minister of State for Provincial Affairs Cde Nomthandazo Moyo will deliver the President’s speech.
Cde Moyo yesterday said this year’s celebrations are unique in that they mark the July 31 election victory for Zanu-PF, the party that brought independence for the people of Zimbabwe.

She said it was important for all people to come together to celebrate their hard won independence.

“This is a very special day for every Zimbabwean. The freedom that we enjoy today must be celebrated in a special way. We have selfless friends and relatives, who died to liberate this country,” said Cde Moyo.

She said it was everybody’s duty to work towards development and create an enabling environment for every Zimbabwean, especially the young people to realise their full potential.

“This year’s independence anniversary is unique as it marks the victory of Zanu-PF which liberated this country,” said Cde Moyo.

She said the thrust now should be to transfer the country’s wealth to the people.

“The people should benefit from the country’s abundant natural resources such as minerals,” said Cde Moyo.

She said government has since come up with an economic blueprint, Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (Zim-Asset) to guide development for the next five years.

“As we celebrate this day, we also observe efforts made by the government to economically empower the people of Zimbabwe”, she said.
In Matabeleland South, the independence celebrations will be held in Gwanda.

Minister of State for Matabeleland South provincial affairs, who will also deliver the President’s speech Cde Abednico Ncube urged people to come in their numbers to celebrate their freedom.

“This is an important day for every Zimbabwean. We expect maximum participation because we  are all enjoying the fruits of independence. It is a day when we reflect on where we came from as a country and remind one another the sacrifices that were made by our sisters and brothers to bring about this freedom. We all know that a lot of blood was shed for this country to be liberated,” said Cde Ncube.

His counterpart in Matabeleland North province Cde Cain Mathema said the provincial celebrations would be held at Somhlolo Stadium in Lupane.

He said as the country celebrated Independence Day, it was important for the people of Zimbabwe to direct their energy towards development and empowerment of the people.

“Matabeleland North joins the rest of the country in celebrating this important day.  We have come a long way as a country and we therefore have a duty to guard jealosuly the peace and tranquility prevailing in the country,” said Mathema.
