ZIMBABWE will host the three nation Gilberson and Page Trophy ladies golf tournament set for Borrowdale Brooke and Chapman Golf clubs in Harare from August 3-6.

The Gilberson and Page Trophy tournament, which was first played in 1969, will see Zimbabwean ladies taking to the greens against their counterparts from Zambia and Kenya.

“The teams are expected to arrive in Zimbabwe on Sunday. The Kenyans will come by air while the Zambians arrive by road,” said Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union publicity officer Evelyn Maisvoreva.

Team Zimbabwe will be represented by 12-year-old golf lass Danielle Bekker, top golfers Aulia Alfazema and Batsirai Tilowakuti. Seasoned golfer Yolanda Mubaiwa makes a return to the national team while newcomers Sarah Blythe-Wood, Emily Jones, Natasha Zelow and Brenda Leipi are also part of the squad that will be managed by Rhoda Muridzo.

The biennial golf tourney was last won by Kenya, who were the hosts, and Zimbabwe will also be hoping to make full use of home advantage to claim gold.

The first Gilberson and Page Trophy Ladies’ Golf Tournament in 1969 was between East Africa and Zambia and has now grown to become the top ladies’ golf event in the region.

Jack Gilberson and Reg Page of Zambia presented the G and P Trophy in 1969. Zimbabwe was first invited in 1983, making the tournament a triangular clash.

In 1991, the event became a biennial championship hosted alternately by the participating nations.

The matches consist of three four-ball matches, ordinarily played in the morning and six singles matches in the afternoon.
