As the nation celebrates the 22nd anniversary of the Unity Accord signed between President Mugabe and the late Vice President Dr Joshua Nkomo in 1987, Zanu-PF yesterday said pretenders and those who fanned factionalism have no place in the revolutionary party. The Unity Day celebrations are an annual event commemorated on December 22.

In a statement issued ahead of next week’s celebrations, Zanu-PF spokesperson Cde Simon Khaya Moyo said the revolutionary party had only one centre of power in President Mugabe who was recently endorsed as the party’s First Secretary and sole candidate for 2018 elections.

Cde Khaya Moyo warned corrupt and pseudo-revolutionaries who paid lip service to the party that they would soon regret their actions.

Cde Khaya Moyo’s remarks come in the wake of foiled efforts by ousted Vice President Joice Mujuru and her cabal to assassinate President Mugabe and replace him with the disgraced former VP.

“Pretenders have no room in Zanu-PF,” he said.

“Corruption has no room in Zanu-PF. Those who give lip service to the revolution will regret their activities.  We have often heard of the existence of factions within our revolutionary party. No one should lead or belong to a faction.”

Cde Khaya Moyo said Zanu-PF does not brook factionalism within its rank and file. He said the Unity Accord was all about uniting Zimbabweans regardless of their tribe and/or race.

“The Unity Accord has no provision for factionalism…,” he said.

“A principled cadre can only belong to the party with one leader and one centre of power. In Zanu-PF, our leader is President Mugabe and no one else and it is therefore incumbent upon all of us to celebrate Unity Day by reflecting and stock taking our actions as we endeavour to fully subscribe to our party motto.”

He said it was important for Zimbabweans to always bear in mind that it was the two military wings of Zanla and Zipra that brought independence after a protracted war with the minority Smith regime.

Cde Khaya Moyo chronicled the history of the Unity Accord which dates back to 1976 after the formation of the Patriotic Front.

“It is well known that the formation of the Patriotic Front in 1976 was the basis for the Unity of the two liberation movements (Zanu (PF) and PF-Zapu) as the negotiations which ensued with the British in Geneva, Malta and the Lancaster House Conference testify,” he said.

“When we attained independence in 1980, the two parties  formed a Unity Government. It became desirable that the two parties engage in extensive and intensive negotiations to form one party.”

Acting President Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday said Zimbabweans should continue to cherish the Unity Accord signed between Zanu-PF and PF-Zapu for the sake of peace, stability and development of the nation.

Cde Mnangagwa said the current events and the past were replete with lessons that the unity of a nation was better than fragmentation, which led to civil strife and lack of development.

He said the government took the Unity Accord so seriously that it had incorporated some provisions of the accord into the new Constitution of Zimbabwe.
