MOST Zimbabweans view opposition MDC formations as irrelevant to both the current and future politics of the country, a survey has revealed.

According to results of the latest survey done by the Mass Public Opinion Institute (MPOI), most Zimbabweans said they had lost faith in the three opposition formations, the MDC-T, the MDC led by Professor Welshman Ncube as well as the Renewal Team.

The survey which was commissioned by the Afrobarometer was conducted in September last year and the results were released in Bulawayo last week.

“A majority of Zimbabweans thought that the MDC-N and MDC Renewal Team are not at all relevant in both the current and future politics of the country. While most adult Zimbabweans ,47 percent also thought that the MDC-T is not relevant in the current politics of the country , opinion was however equally split 42 percent thought it will not be relevant while 43 percent thought otherwise about the future role of the MDC-T in the politics of Zimbabwe,” said the findings.

Nationally, according to the findings, 47 percent of the people believed that the MDC -T was not relevant at all, while 67 percent said the MDC led by Prof Ncube was not relevant and 61 percent said the MDC Renewal Team was not relevant in the current politics.

In the urban areas, where the MDC-T is perceived to command most of its support, 37 percent said it is relevant to a smaller extent in the current politics while 53 percent rural dwellers shared the same sentiments.

The view by the majority of Zimbabweans that the opposition is irrelevant has seen Zanu-PF and President Robert Mugabe winning successive general elections, the last being the 2013 polls in which the ruling party garnered more than two thirds majority in parliament.

Zanu PF has gone on to win all the by-elections held since 2013 and in June this year after opposition MPs were expelled from parliament for defecting from the MDC-T to the Renewal Team.

Critics have cited MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s bed-hopping, indecisive leadership and ideological bankruptcy as some of the reasons why he has been rejected by the electorate in most polls held since the formation of his party in 1999.
