Zimbabwe’s wealth should show in the way people live, says VP Mujuru

Officially opening the Employers Confederation of Zimbabwe annual congress in Victoria Falls on Thursday, she said socio-political differences were making it difficult to mobilise resources needed to rebuild the economy.

In a speech read on her behalf by Minister Sylvester Nguni, the Minister of State in her office, Vice President Mujuru said although Zimbabwe was endowed with rich mineral and human resources, the economy was performing below par because of the way the country was perceived.

“The introduction of the multi-currency system in January 2009 positioned our economy on the recovery path. The consummation of the inclusive Government added the required political stability and positioned our country on the stability and growth mode. Be that as it may, a lot still remains to be done in order for us to have a fully recovered and flourishing economy,” she said.

She said the country’s wealth should show in the way people lived.

“We are, however, performing way below our potential because we are perceived as a ‘risky country’ to do business with. This unsavoury perception, coupled with sanctions, makes it difficult for us, as a nation, to mobilise external resources of finance necessary to resuscitate our economy,” she said.

Vice President Mujuru said every Zimbabwean had a role to play to ensure economic revival.
