Zimpapers (1980) Limited has demonstrated its leadership dominance again after its group chief executive officer, Mr Pikirayi Deketeke, won the Businessman of the Year — Media and Publishing Services Industry award — at the Zimbabwe Leadership Awards yesterday.

The Herald also scooped the National Newspaper of the Year award under the Zimbabwe Business Awards category.

Zimpapers public relations and corporate affairs manager, Ms Beatrice Tonhodzayi, and The Herald managing editor, Mrs Victoria Ruzvidzo, received the two awards at a colourful ceremony held in Harare.

In an interview, Mr Deketeke congratulated the entire Zimpapers team for continuing to excel and seeing opportunities in the country for the business to grow and thrive.

“We are certainly defying the odds by opening our eyes and ears to see and hear what services and products our people want in our areas of business. This is what is making us continuously relevant to all our markets,” he said.

Some of the prominent individuals who received awards included Chitungwiza Central Hospital chief executive Dr Obadiah Moyo, who scooped the Medical and Health Leadership Excellence Institution of the Year award National 2017, and Hospital of the Year award for Chitungwiza Hospital; and the Lifetime Achievement award in Strategic Leadership Excellence.

Mrs Farirai Guta of Manyame Rural District Council scooped the top female chief executive of the year award National 2017 — Special Recognition in Leadership Excellence, while Dr Caroline Chirima won the Businesswoman of the Year Award National 2017 — Special Recognition in Information Communication Technologies (ICT) and Security Services.

Businessman of the Year Award National 2017 — ICT and Retail Services Industry was scooped by Mr Langton Chikukwa while Business Leader of the Year Award National 2017 — Special Recognition in Community Development and Leadership Excellence went to Mr Edward Pise.

Makoni Rural District Council won the Organisation of the Year Award National 2017 — Special Recognition in Community Development and Leadership Excellence, while the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec) scooped the Organisation of the Year Award National 2017 — Special Recognition in Academic Leadership Excellence.

The Company of the Year Award National 2017 — ICT and Retail Services Industry was scooped by Firstpack.

The awards celebrate successes in various disciplines, including business, sports, education and the arts.
