Zimuto wins Liquor Hub Fun Run

TENDAI Zimuto of Black Rhinos Athletics Club shrugged off stiff competition to win the second edition of the Liquor Hub 10km Fun Run and 5km Charity Walk held in Bulawayo yesterday.
He crossed the line ahead of second placed Wellington Varevi of Blanket Mine Athletics Club and Hwange Athletics Club’s Phathisa Ngwabi in 30 minutes 52.65 seconds.
Varevi and Ngwabi clocked 31 minutes 04.87 seconds and 32 minutes 11.81 seconds respectively.
For his efforts the 21-year-old Zimuto collected $500 while Varevi pocketed $300. Ngwabi took home $200.
“Last year I came second after Pangiso (Kelvin) and I’m happy to have won the race this time around. In October, I won the Old Mutual Vumba Mountain Half Marathon and the ZRP Half Marathon, so 2016 has been a good year for me,” said Zimuto.
In the women’s category Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services’ Patience Murowe finished the race ahead of Anne Chirisa and Linnet Tomu in 36 minutes 56.07 seconds.
Chirisa of ZRP Bulawayo Province followed at a distant second in 42 minutes 20.70 seconds while Tomu who is not attached to a club came third in 49 minutes 28.57 seconds.
“It was a good race although it started late which meant running under very hot conditions. The terrain is fairly flat compared to other races I have taken part in,” said Murove.
In June she won the Old Mutual Nkulumane 10km Fun Run in 36 minutes 15 seconds. For winning the Raji Modi sponsored Liquor Hub 10km Fun Run and 5km Charity Walk, which was bankrolled to the tune of $10 000, Murove took home $500.
Half of the sponsorship package will be donated to a charitable organisation in the Matabeleland region.
