THE 2016 Commander Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) Charities Shield will be officially launched at the Army Headquarters in Harare on Wednesday next week.

This year’s event will feature eight teams, last year’s finalists Dynamos, Caps United, Harare City and ZPC Kariba from the Northern Region and defending champions Highlanders, How Mine, Chicken Inn and FC Platinum from the Southern Region. The quarter-finals will be played on March 5.

Army Charities head of secretariat Major Fabion Chitungo said they had decided to make this year’s event bigger to create a wider platform to reap greater rewards for charity.

“We will have our official launch next Wednesday in Harare and eight teams will go into the draw basket for the first time in the competition’s history because the cup is all about charity,” said Chitungo.

The ZNA wants to raise $500,000 for their five major charities through various initiatives, which also include the Charity Shield soccer. Chitungo said their target was to raise $35,000 per match.

Apart from the soccer tournament, the other fundraising initiatives are the ZNA Charities Ball, Bulawayo Golf Tournament, the dinner dance, the horse racing event to be held at the Borrowdale Racecourse in Harare and the thanksgiving dinner.

Highlanders beat archrivals Dynamos 1-0, with Obidiah Tarumbwa scoring the solitary goal at Rufaro Stadium last year to lift the ZNA Charities Shield.
