A SENIOR official in the Zimbabwe National Army has condemned indiscipline among junior soldiers saying they were tarnishing the image of the country’s armed forces.

In an interview, outgoing 1.3 Reserve Force Battalion commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Oscar Tshuma, said soldiers should refrain from engaging in activities that may compromise the country’s security.

He said members of the armed forces have to respect other service providers and the general public.

“Discipline is a necessity among members of the armed forces. It is a pity that some junior members tend to abuse their powers by harassing civilians.

“Being a member of the armed forces does not make a person untouchable. All those who misbehave will be dealt with accordingly,” said Lt Col Tshuma.

He said reports of aggressive behaviour among armed forces have to come to an end.

Some members of the armed forces have on several occasions appeared in court after violating the law.

In his farewell speech, Lt Col Tshuma, who has been elevated to commanding officer 1.1 combat group, commended his former unit for accomplishing given tasks.

He promised to continue working hard for the army and country even in his new office.

The incoming commanding officer for the station, Lt Colonel Chrispen Mhere Nduku, said he would maintain the set standards.

“I take it as a great challenge for me to continue raising the unit flag to maintain the set standards. I promise to do my level best in my duties and live up to the expectations.

“Let me also assure you that whatever I do will be guided by the dictates of the Defence Act, supporting statutes and instructions that shall be issued by headquarters,” he said.

Lt Col Nduku said he would maintain discipline within his new station.

The ceremony was attended by members of the armed forces, heads of government departments, the business community and community members

Commander 1 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier-General Thomas Moyo, also graced the occasion.
