A Kwekwe High School learner, Douglas Daka shrugged off competition from over 100 golfers to win the Camelot Primary School golf tournament held at Kwekwe Golf Club over the weekend.
The 16-year-old who started teeing off last year, scooped the top prize ahead of seasoned and experienced golfers from across the country who had gathered for the one-day tournament.
The tournament is a brainchild of Camelot Primary School to introduce the sport to the young ones at an early age and has since started yielding results.
Camelot Primary School headmistress Mrs Claris Sithole expressed satisfaction with the gains of the tournament since its introduction last year.
“This is only the second edition after our first edition which started last year. We are already witnessing the results of catching them young since the tournament was won by a junior who happens to be a product of our junior policy. We want the young ones to turn pro, start playing this game at an early age and perhaps earn a living from the game,” she said.
Kwekwe Golf Club stand-in captain, Dr Isheunesu Dube said the fact that the tournament was won by a junior, shows that the junior policy was already yielding results.
“It shows that there are huge improvements among our juniors both in number and in quality of play. We never used to have any juniors playing but in this tournament, we had more than 40 junior players. If the winner is a junior, it goes to show that the quality is fantastic,” he said.
Daka, who started playing last year, vowed to continue playing the sport.
“I started training last year and I want to thank my coach who kept pushing me to take the game seriously. It keeps me busy because most of my time if I’m not at the golf course, I am at school. Most people my age are doing drugs and substance abuse but I am always busy and it teaches me respect and professionalism,” he said.
