Nama 2024 nominees unveiled . . . Madlela, Freeman, Saintfloew, among top contenders

THE National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) has unveiled the nominees for the 23rd edition of the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA), covering a vibrant array of artistic disciplines. With an impressive 2 371 entries submitted, the nominations reflected a rich tapestry of talent nationwide.
The award ceremony will be held at Hippodrome in Harare on March 1.
Held live on Facebook and YouTube, the nominations announcement was made by musician, Hope Masike while one-half of the duo hosts, Charlene Mangweni-Furusa steered proceedings.
Among the nominees, Munashe Goromonzi stands out as a prominent figure, being nominated twice in both the Theatre and Film & Television categories for her roles in “Molly Street” and “The November Promise”, respectively This dual recognition highlights her versatility and skill, making her a key contender at this year’s awards.
In the music category, Emergy Chizanga (aka Freeman HKD) and Tawanda Mambo (aka Saintfloew) are notable figures, each garnering nominations for both Outstanding Male Musician and Outstanding Album, showcasing their significant contributions to the Zimbabwean music scene.
The awards also acknowledge the dynamic dance community, with Tichaona “Hero” Chikara nominated for both Outstanding Male Dancer and Outstanding Choreographer for his work with Salt ‘n’ Light. This dual nomination positions him as a critical player in promoting dance as an art form in Zimbabwe.
The visual arts scene is represented by notable artistes like Portia Zvavahera and Ismael Mposa, each nominated for Outstanding Female and Male Visual Artist, respectively.
For the “People’s Choice Award” Nkosilathi Sibiya aka Voltz JT, Dorcas Moyo, Theophilus Chigumira aka Mai Kilifodhi, Wallace Chirumiko aka Winky D, and Hillary Marufu aka Master H will battle it out.
Bulawayo stood up and got counted with comedian Mbongeni Ignatius Ndlovu getting his first Nama nomination under the “Outstanding Stand-Up Comedian” category alongside Madlela Skhobokhobo, Sithandazile Dube, choreographer, Future Dube, John Mabuyane, and Elaine Ncube.
In a press statement, the NACZ expressed gratitude to all participants, stating, “A Nama nomination is already a national endorsement.”
