20 years in jail for rape in sorghum field

A 25-YEAR-OLD man from Majongwe village was jailed 20 years by the Bindura Magistrates’ Court for raping a 43 year old woman.
The unnamed man allegedly ambushed the woman (43) while she was walking home from Mushumbi growth point. The complainant was walking on a footpath through a sorghum field when the accused emerged from a nearby thick bush, armed with a log
The accused confronted the complainant, demanding sex. She refused, offering her bag of mealie meal to leave peacefully. He refused, chased her, grabbed her neck, tripped her, and raped her despite her pleas for help.
The accused was arrested on 5 April for motorbike theft and linked to the rape case. Complainant positively identified accused in identification parade.
In a statement on X, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said the state proved that on 2 March at around 12pm the accused person ambushed the complainant (43) on her way home from Mushumbi growth point.
“The complainant was passing through a sorghum field on a footpath when the accused person emerged from a thick bush armed with a log. He confronted the complainant and demanded to have sex with her but she refused. She surrendered the bag of mealie meal she was carrying and begged the accused person to let her go but he refused”
“She tried to run away shouting for help, but the accused chased her and grabbed her by the neck, tripped her down and raped her. He fled from the scene. The complainant dressed herself and went home where she narrated her ordeal to her husband.”
“On 5 April the accused person was arrested over a theft of a motorbike and was linked to the rape case. The complainant positively identified the accused person at an identification parade. “
“The accused person was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment,” said the NPAZ
