27 more die  as Covid-19 cases in hot spots decline

TWENTY-SEVEN people succumbed to Covid-19 while 319 new cases were recorded in the country in the last 24-hour reporting cycle.

All cases are local transmissions.

This comes as the Ministry of Health and Child Care has reported that cases in the areas previously designated as hot spots have been declining due to public health control measures being implemented as surveillance continues in these areas.

The seven-day rolling average for new cases fell to 324 from 352 the previous day.

There were 901 new recoveries and the National Recovery Rate was 88 percent while active cases went down to 10 340 from 10 949 the previous day.

A total of 7 186 PCR tests were done and positivity was 4.4 percent.

Only Matabeleland North did not record deaths as Harare, Mashonaland Central and Matabeleland South each had five deaths.

Bulawayo had four deaths while Mashonaland West, Midlands and Masvingo had two deaths each.

Manicaland and Mashonaland East had one death each.

Manicaland had the highest 45 new cases followed by Bulawayo with 43, and Harare and Mashonaland Central which had 38 each. Matabeleland North and South recorded 36 new cases each, Masvingo 35, Mashonaland East 25 and Mashonaland West 15.

Midlands had eight new cases.

The vaccination programme is continuing countrywide with 37 016 people receiving their first jab bringing the cumulative for 1st dose to 2 382 359.

About 23 397 received their second dose bringing the cumulative total for second dose to 1 506 445.

As of August 23, 2021, at 3PM, there were 402 people who were hospitalized. Of these, 29 were new admissions while those that were asymptomatic were 93 and 221 had mild to moderate symptoms.

Fifty-three people had severe symptoms while 35 were in Intensive Care Units (ICU).

“As of 24 August 2021, Zimbabwe has now recorded 123 320 confirmed cases, 108 660 recoveries and 4 320 deaths,” reads the statement from the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
